Russia launched one of its biggest overnight attacks on Ukraine in recent months, firing hundreds of drones and dozens of missiles across multiple regions. The massive assault left at least four people dead and many others injured, while causing widespread destruction in the capital city Kyiv and surrounding areas. According to Ukrainian officials, loud explosions echoed throughout Kyiv during the night as air defence systems attempted to intercept incoming missiles and drones. Several residential buildings, shopping areas, emergency service facilities, schools, and cultural sites were damaged during the strikes. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Kyiv was the primary target of the attack, though many other regions were also hit. He stated that around 100 people were injured, while emergency rescue operations continued across affected locations. Zelensky also claimed that Russia may have used its powerful “Oreshnik” hypersonic missile during the assault. The Oreshnik missile is believed to travel at more than ten times the speed of sound, making it extremely difficult to intercept. Reports suggest it is capable of carrying both conventional and nuclear warheads, raising serious international concerns about the escalation of the war. Russia’s Defence Ministry defended the strikes, claiming they were carried out in response to alleged Ukrainian attacks on Russian-controlled territories. Moscow stated that the operation targeted Ukrainian military command centers and intelligence facilities, while Ukraine denied intentionally targeting civilians. The attack reportedly involved nearly 600 drones and around 90 missiles launched overnight. Ukraine’s Air Force claimed that many drones and missiles were intercepted before reaching their targets, but several strikes still managed to hit critical locations directly. Authorities confirmed damage at more than 50 sites across Kyiv alone. Among the damaged locations was the Chornobyl Museum in Kyiv, which Ukrainian officials described as being “effectively destroyed.” Ukraine’s Interior Ministry called it “a deliberate attack on history, memory, and truth.” Images released after the attack showed shattered windows, destroyed interiors, and debris scattered around the museum premises. Emergency teams worked throughout the night to rescue trapped civilians, extinguish fires, and clear debris from collapsed buildings. In one incident, debris reportedly blocked the entrance to a school shelter, trapping several people inside during the attack. The latest escalation has triggered strong international reactions.
